Supplementary feeding for the baby
Quantity of food
6- 7 months: 50-75 ml or gram on each occasion
Cereals like Idli, brown rice or white rice, kichdi, sooji (rava) ,Fortified cereals like Cerelac and Nestum (rice) as well Can also be used
Proteins like Dhal (Toor dhal, Moong dhal water initially then whole dhal), Raagi
Pulses like green grams, channa dhal
Vegetables like Steamed and pureed form of Carrot, Beet root, Sweet potato, Potato, mashed peas
Fruits (good source of multivitamins and minerals) like Banana, steamed apple, pears, papaya, chikoo, mango, musk melon and avocados in puree form. Oranges, watermelon, Pineapple and pomergranate as juice (15 to 20ml every day) can be given 1 in 3 dilutions
8 months 7-8 months: 75 – 100 ml or gram on each occasion
Greens like Spinach, methi, local greens, pumpkin, broccoli, cauliflower, curds, butter milk, ghee in diet.
By now your child should be taking at least 7 fruits and 7 vegetables. Use water, fruit juice like orange juice and vegetable purees to avoid constipation.
9 months 9- 12 months: 100 – 150 ml or gram on each occasion
Start on high calorie diets like boiled egg yolk, minced meat, chicken liver, mutton liver, mutton soup, chicken soup.
You may start adding salt and sugar in your baby’s food.
Start the baby on nuts like cashews, almonds, pista and walnuts.
Giving home-made curds is an important part of your baby’s diet after 9 months. Ground nuts and other high calorie pulses like rajma, chick peas, double beans can also be started.
11 months and after
Steamed fish can be started from 11 months. Honey can also be started beyond 1 year of age. Pasteurized Cow’s milk from diaries like Aavin and Egg white can be started after 1 year of age. By 1 year of age your child should be eating everything what you eat at home. Mostly try to avoid outside food
All food introduced should be mashed and pasty. 1 to 2 solid feeds at 6 to 7 months of age. 2 to 3 or more solid feeds past 7 months of age. Rest of day should be milk. Do not force feed. Try adding new food every 3rd day or 4th day. No salt or sugar is necessary until 9 months to 1 year. NO BISCUITS and other processed food.
